About Sensei

In 1988, Sensei Mike joined Fighting Griffin Martial Arts in Oakville under the guidance of Master Instructor Scott Hogarth. He studied Go Ju Ryu Karate Do,

Hapkido and Ryukyu Kobudo. In 1992 Mike received his first-degree black belt in karate. In August 2003, Sensei Mike traveled to Okinawa Japan, along with Kyoshi Hogarth and the Fighting Griffins competition team to participate in the Okinawan World Karate championships, where he placed sixth in the Kata division.

While in Okinawa, Sensei Mike had the opportunity to train with Hanshi Toyama Zenshu, the founder of Shin Ji Kan Go Ju Ryu karate, and instructor of Kyoshi Hogarth. Sensei was awarded his third degree black belt at that time and certified as an instructor in cultural Okinawan martial arts. In May 2004, Sensei Mike opened Fighting Griffin Family Karate in St. Matthias church on Kortright Rd. West. In June 2007 Sensei Mike moved Fighting Griffin Family Karate to itsĀ  home in the Heartland Plaza, at 210 Kortright Rd West # 8.

Sensei Mike currently holds a 5th degree Black belt, is a certified instructor through Kapap Canada, and is an active tournament competitor and referee. Sensei Mike teaches karate in Guelph and continues his training.
